Apple Macintosh Tips & Tricks

Quick Reference Guides for MacOS from CustomGuide:

Mac Defender Malware (or MacShield or MacGuard)

Attention our Mac clients and others who may see this page ... there are some nasty things going on in the Mac world!   Today (Sunday 12 June 2011) I was hit by an attempt to load malicious software (malware) onto my iMac. The popup looked just like a message from Apple which said I had 87 viruses, etc.  If you see the message below DO NOT CLICK "REMOVE ALL" — if you do you will be installing the Trojan virus.

I immediately called my Mac Man at Imagetext, Mike Scragg, to ask "What is going on? ... and ... "What should I do?". He said it was a virus attack. Allegedly from the Apple Security Centre, and wanting to install a "virus protector" onto my iMac  ... BUT it was in fact the virus wanting to install itself onto my iMac!

DO NOT INSTALL

It looks so real doesn't it!  BUT DO NOT INSTALL IT!  You can see the size is only 106 kb - it's a virus. The names to be aware of are: MAC Defender aka Mac Security, Mac Protector, Mac Guard, and Mac Shield. You may also find something has been downloaded onto your desktop - DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!!

For more information on how to handle this situation go to the Apple support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4650

"A recent phishing scam has targeted Mac users by redirecting them from legitimate websites to fake websites which tell them that their computer is infected with a virus. The user is then offered Mac Defender "anti-virus" software to solve the issue."

"Security software firm ESET reports that its research team has detected a new fake MacDefender variant, "MacShield." Dan Clark, an ESET vice-president, writes Friday on the company's blog that "As in the case of its oldest sibling MacDefender, the MacShield variant has taken the name of a legitimate Mac OS X software product..." from Technolog on msn.com

"Mac Guard is a fake mac security thing which is from the same family such as Mac Protector, Mac Defender and Apple Security Center." From PC Fixes
